Storm Dennis update - 14,000 ESB customers left without power with thunderstorms and hail in places.

An estimated 14,000 homes and businesses across the country are without power – ESB say crews are working to fix the problems and updates can be found at powercheck.ie worst affected this afternoon have been Tuam, County Galway – 2,099, Whitechurch, County Cork – 1,523, Johnstown, Co Kildare – 1,522, Nass, Co. Kildare – 1,300, Castlelyons, Co. Cork – 1,063.

Around 700 esb customers are also without power in the areas of Kilcar and Glencolumbkille Donegal.

Further north in Donegal there are 32 without power in Milford after a thunderstorm caused power outages in the area.

A bulk of the power outages this afternoon also occurred around Clare and Limerick where passing heavy showers and thunderstorms lead to frequent lightning.

In parts of Munster and Leinster there also has been Thunderstorms which have lead to heavy hail showers leaving roads white as the passed over Cork with some collisions reported in the county.

In Kilkenny there were also hail showers with some large hail the size of marbles reported

In Kildare a large squall line passed over the county with intense rain and hail showers this afternoon with severe winds leading to power outages and trees coming down.

The storm has caused the River Drowes to burst its banks at the Leitrim/Donegal border. As a result, adjacent fields in the Tullaghan/Bundoran area have been flooded.

The morning flight to Dublin from Donegal airport at Carrickfinn was cancelled but decisions have yet to be made in relation to other flights from the airport this afternoon. There has been no disruption to flights from Ireland West Airport at Knock.

Ferry services to and from Árainn Mhór are expected to be curtailed or cancelled this afternoon. There will be no ferry service to or from Tóraigh today due to the strong winds.

Ferry services to and from Clare Island in Co Mayo have also been cancelled.
