Two people have died in the seas off the coast of Kent in separate incidents just a few miles apart.

Kent Police were called at 12.15pm on Saturday to a report that someone had been pulled from the sea at Herne Bay near Margate.

When officers arrived, the man was declared dead at the scene. The family are aware and the death is not being treated as suspicious. It's understood that the man had been missing since last night.

Separately, a body was recovered off the coast of Margate, after an early morning distress call reporting a man overboard, the coastguard has said.

A spokesman said: "At around 1pm, after many hours of searching, a body was sadly found in the water by the RNLI Margate lifeboat and has been brought to shore."

The distress call was thought to have come from a Maltese tanker anchored off the Margate coast at 5.41am.

Lifeboats and a helicopter could be seen searching the sea waters after the report was received. It is thought that HMS Westminster was also part of the rescue operation.
