Around 60,000 homes and businesses were hit by power outages as Storm Callum tracked across the country with the worst of the storm affecting the west coast.

Gusts in excess of 110km/h were recorded, but no major incidents have been reported.

ESB Networks reported faults in Kilkenny, Mayo, Wexford, Kildare, Donegal, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Galway and crews are working to restore power as soon as possible.

The National Emergency Coordination Group met this morning to review the impact of the storm and while the worst has now passed, people are still being urged to be aware of local conditions and to stay away from coastal areas while the Status Orange warning remains in place.

High tide passed in Galway city without any major incident after fears that a 5.2 metre tide, combined with strong onshore winds, could lead to flooding.

But a temporary "aquadam" along the banks of the Corrib contained the river, with just some spot flooding close to the Spanish Arch.

Grattan Road in Salthill is closed between Mutton Island and The Promenade, which is also closed from there to Blackrock.

Local home and business owners in Galway say the frequency of storms over the winter months means Galway City Council has to progress with plans for more permanent flood defences as soon as possible.

Part of the promenade wall in Tramore, Co Waterford, was damaged and the prom is expected to remain closed until at least 4pm.

A number of Aer Lingus flights from Dublin were cancelled this morning and there are ferry cancellations on Irish Sea crossings.

This afternoon's Irish Ferries sailing from Dublin to Cherbourg has been put back until tomorrow.

Around 900 homes and businesses in Lisburn, Co Antrim, were hit by power outages due to high winds and electricity supplies were also disrupted in counties Armagh and Fermanagh.

Ferry services to islands off the coast of Donegal have been disrupted. There have been no services to Árain Mhór but the situation will be reviewed in the afternoon.

Ferry services to Tóraigh have been cancelled for the day.

full moon over rising over Albufeira, Portugal

I was in Albufeira Portugal I was waiting for the full moon to come up and it did not let me down.

The orange and red tints that the Moon sometimes take on rising and setting are caused by the particles in the Earth's atmosphere. When light (or more specifically, packets of light called photons) from an astronomical object passes through the Earth's atmosphere, it scatters off of particles in the latter.
