SAHARAN DUST TO REACH IRELAND ON TUESDAY ANYONE WITH RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS SHOULD BE ALERT

Early next week a plume of Saharan dust will travel effect Ireland and the UK, The massive dust event is caused by a broad cutoff upper low over the Iberian peninsula and the western Mediterranean.  In turn this moves the dust northwards.

This dust has made the 3,000 km trip to Ireland in strong southerly winds.

Late Monday into Tuesday and early Wednesday there is a risk of high levels of Saharan dust reaching Ireland and moving northwards.

In order for the dust to get from up in the sky down to the ground, you need something to wash it out of the sky - rain. As raindrops fall, they collect particles of dust on the way down. Then when the raindrops land on something and eventually evaporate, they leave behind a layer of dust.

Saharan dust is relatively common in the Ireland and the UK often happening several times a year when big dust storms in the Sahara coincide with southerly wind patterns. In certain weather situations, Saharan dust can also affect air pollution and pollution levels.

With high tree pollen levels and the Saharan dust levels high on Tuesday people that are effected by pollen and suffer from respiratory problems such as asthma, Chronic Obstructive, Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Chronic, Bronchitis, Emphysema, Lung Cancer, Cystic Fibrosis/Bronchiectasis, Pneumonia and Pleural Effusion and so on south be aware of the increasing risk of pollution to the air.

low levels of Saharan dust will be in the air on Monday but but Tuesday larger amounts of dust is forecast to effect Ireland shown in the charts below.

One way to see the Saharan dust is to check your car or any vehicle on Tuesday and the dust will be visible, sometimes this dust can get caught up in weather systems and fall within the rain.
