Today will see heavy showers become more frequent and heavier over the afternoon with the risk of some showers falling as rain, sleet and hail to lower levels and snow over higher ground and roads which could give a covering in places. showers will ease mostly everywhere over night but some further isolated wintry falls could occur across parts of the northwest and north for a time tonight leading to slippery conditions.

Due to the showers today across the Ireland and the ongoing risk of showers over this afternoon, evening and early tonight this will lead to wet road surfaces and with temperatures looking set to drop as low as -3C in places with highs of around 2C this will see widespread frost developing and ice on any wet roads.

The biggest risk tonight and Thursday morning will be Black ice forming on untreated roads and footpaths which will lead to dangerous conditions across parts of the country espcially across the west and north of Ireland.

On Thursday night and Friday morning a weather front from the Atlantic will move in from the west pushing eastwards over the morning and as this weather front moves to west to east precipitation could fall as sleet or snow for a time before turning back to rain. Over higher ground areas like mountains a dusting of snowfall should be expected on Friday morning so anyone heading for walks in the mountains or over higher ground this week and the weekend should be alert for some tricky conditions as temperatures will be at freezing level. Always make sure to let someone know where you are going and the route you are taken. If you are not a experienced hiker you are best of to stay away from hiking.

I am currently keeping a eye on a weather system early next week Monday into Tuesday which could give a good dusting of snow by Tuesday morning. I will update you on that later in the week pending no changes in the model runs over the coming days.
