AURORA ALERT TONIGHT- G2 SOLAR STORM IN PROGRESS

A G-2 solar storm is currently underway as a high-speed stream of solar wind buffets Earth's magnetic field. The gaseous material is flowing from a large hole in the sun's atmosphere. So far auroras have been observed in Iceland, Alaska, Norway, Finland, Wisconsin and Michigan--with more expected tonight if the storm continues.

Best chance of seen the aurora will be over northern parts of Ireland.

G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm conditions were observed at 1420 UTC on 31 August due to coronal hole high speed stream activity. The G2 (Moderate) warning has been extended until 31/2100 UTC.

CONTINUES BELOW

Tonight Saturday will see good clear spells around many parts of Ireland but some showers will also occur across the northwest and northern coastal counties but some clear spells also.

If you are heading out make sure to wrap up and stay warm as with a west to northwest breeze it will not feel all that warm.

CONTINUES BELOW

  • Times to check for the aurora are as soon as it gets dark so around 9pm to 9:30pm onward.

  • Make sure to look north

  • The aurora will not always be there and some times may only drop southwards for a few minutes and the retrieve back northwards depends on how negative the bz goes.

  • Keep a eye on the Donegal Weather Channel facebook page for updates tonight.

  • If you see the Aurora let us know.

  • As mentioned above don’t expect the aurora just to be sitting there as it can move south and then back north a number of times in the night and thats just the whole fun of Aurora hunting.
